Thank you! You are considering the possibility of having your child baptized into our Catholic Community of faith. To share with you our common joy and responsibility to raise your child in the teachings and practices of Jesus, our community has arranged a special catechetical instruction for parents. We hope this experience, which Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone asks of us, helps you to better understand and appreciate the meaning and dignity of this sacrament and the life in the church.
Baptism is the Church's way of welcoming and initiating people into Her community of faith and love. This entrance into the Church requires a firm commitment on the part of the parents, sponsors and the community. This community pledges its support, concern and love to both parents and the child. The parents are expected to pledge themselves as teachers of their child in the teachings and practices of the Church. Thus, faith is essential to this commitment. You live this faith by creating a loving faith-filled environment at home.
It is important, so that your child may someday be able to live the baptismal experience of faith and love at home. Through the living example of the parents' faith and love of each other, the child matures properly to reach a commitment to our Roman Catholic community. This witness of faith is not just for the parent of the child, it is for everyone. This is symbolized by the presence of sponsors. The sponsors are the official representatives of the Church community, and we ask that at least one of the sponsors be a practicing Roman Catholic.
